throughout the chapter, it talks a lot about louisiana government trying to get integration banned and to be able to play football against just other segregated tames. since the sugar bowl was in louisiana there were not many schools that were able to play in it. LSU went to it in 1958 and 1959

  • segregation media went to pelican state not to push segregation but to do what media should do, write about football

  • sugar bowl invited naval academy in 1954, the school sold its tickets to segregated tulane stadium on an integrated basis
  • 1955 xavier university played keesler air force base in its LA first integrated college football game
  • 1955 georgia tech going to play Pittsburgh university in sugar bowl but governor of georgia said he wouldnt allow it cause tech was segregated and Pitt was not
  • georgia tech did play even if the gov. didnt want them to
  • because baseball was integrated, many white southerners believed no other sports should be integrated (p. 89-90)
  • Georgia tried to get a bill passed to ban integrated sports but it failed
  • Alabama was successful in passing it but didnt take it as seriously as Louisiana
  • Louisiana cancelled all college football games that would have been integrated

  • secretary of air force banned the academy from participating in segregated sporting events
